  2.                         As promised, here is version 2 of Best Fit

  4. WHAT DOES IT DO
  5. You've got a couple of CD's. You've got a walkman. The walkman plays tapes, not CD's. So what do you do?  You copy the tracks from the CD to the tape, but end up with a GIGANTIC gap at the ends of each tape side. Or with that excellent track chopped in half.

  7. Second Best (Best Fit 2.0) comes to the rescue. Second Best controls almost every aspect of getting a perfect fit of your tracks onto tape.

  9. There are three very simple stages:
  10. 1. You enter each track into a list. (This is automated to an extent, if you insert a CD into your computer's CD drive, then there is a very fast way of adding the tracks off that CD to the list). You can have up to 100 tracks.

  12. 2. You let the computer work out the best fit.
  13.  
  14. 3. The computer will then control the CD player, playing the required tracks in the correct order. All you have to do is occasionally press the pause button on your tape recorder.

  16. AND
  17. 1. You don't have to record from CD. Second Best allows you to record from any source. You can even have CD tracks and tracks from another source on the same tape. Second Best takes care of it for you.

  19. 2. You can adjust the final position of tracks on the tape(s). You can move tracks from tape to tape, and lock tracks once they are in the correct position. Then the computer will fit the remaining tracks in the gaps that are left.

  21. Second Best gives a you a lot more control than Best Fit 1.0.
  22. • There is a mechanism that lets you position tracks where you want them, and then the computer will fit the other tracks into the gaps.
  23. • You can switch to the Finder, or to another program whilst Second Best is loaded. Best Fit 1.0 did not allow this.
  24. • You can have up to 100 tracks with no speed penalty. Best Fit 1.0 had a limit of 32 tracks, and it got very slow when more than 20 tracks were used.

  26. Second Best does a lot more for you than Best Fit 1.0
  27. • Best Fit 1.0 simply printed out a tape cover, whilst Second Best will do almost all the work involved in creating your tape(s).
  28. • Second Best allows you to enter tracks straight off a CD. This saves you typing them in (typing in the times right was a right pain in Best Fit, especially as not all CD's cases had the track lengths on them.)

  32. Best Fit was launched anonymously, and Second Best is as well.
